Dear Fellows and Friends,
2014 has been, as you all know, an important moment for the NEC, celebrating 20 years of existence. The Fellows and Friends Club could and should play an important role in the future of the NEC, and we invite all of those who registered for the Club, as well as those willing to do so, to share with us their expectations and suggestions.
Following our first meeting at the end of February, some ideas have come up, along with a general enthusiasm in pursuing the Clubbing activities at the NEC.
Therefore, we would like to invite you to the first annual NEC Day, that will mark the beginning of the new academic year, on
Friday October 10th, at 5 pm
This will be an opportunity to meet our 2014-2015 fellows and discuss new objectives and ideas for the Club, and meet with each other again in the welcoming rooms of the NEC.
We would be happy if you could join us. Please confirm your participation before October 6th to my address: cghyka @ nec . ro
Wishing you all a beautiful summer and looking forward to meeting you in October,
Bucharest, January 16th, 2014
Dear Fellows and Friends,
May the beginning of 2014 bring to all of you joy, bright ideas and exhilarating journeys!
For NEC this beginning is a very special one, since in 2014 we are celebrating 20 years of existence. Back in 1994, NEC started as a utopia. Five, then ten years later, we were watching this utopia grow and gather dozens – then hundreds of scholars and friends around the idea of a new – yet old Europe of letters and science. Not only has this utopia not faded: it has turned into a stable and prestigious institution, now at an age that makes us reflect, in looking back, that its course has on occasion resembled a true adventure novel. And you have all participated, at some point, in this adventurous expedition.
The NEC family counts now over 700 fellows and friends. They are – you are – all of you, exceptional scholars and very dear friends. Therefore we would like to hear from you more often, know more about your achievements, projects and ideas. Perhaps you would also like to know more about your colleagues whose contacts you might have lost, or find out about our new fellows.
In order to do all that – and more – we propose to set up a Fellows Club that would renew such links and make new ones, inform you about the other fellows, and organize events that would bring you together, at the NEC. The Club should also facilitate the development of new projects and collaborations around and beyond NEC.
An important instrument for these undertakings will be our new website – on the point of being launched – which will have a section dedicated to the former fellows and to the activities of the Club. Once a year, we would like to initiate a NEC Day, as an opportunity for new fellows to meet former ones, and for former fellows to get together.
We are thinking about issuing a newsletter that would keep you informed of the activities and initiatives of the Club, and of each of you individually. Of course, in order to do so, we will need you to keep us informed about anything you will find of interest for such a publication.
We have some ideas about how the Club should take off, but we expect you – first of all – to share with us your own expectations. We encourage you to send us your news, updates, stories and ideas. Please send all your ideas to my address at the NEC: cghyka.
We would like to have a first meeting of the Club on the 21st of February (17,00h). If you are willing to participate and get involved, please contact me. Those of you who cannot be present at the meeting are invited to send their suggestions via email, and – most importantly – to convey their intention to be a member of the Club. For those not residing in Bucharest and wishing to come, a small budget (up to 500 lei/person) is available for refunding your travel and accommodation expenses (if you announce your participation before February 15th).
We would be very happy for you to join us in bringing the Fellows Club into existence, and remain with us for at least another 20 years!
